Fixing iPhone 6S Plus backlight repair with jumper wire

iPhone 6S Plus backlight repair

iPhone 6S plus backlight repair

Another day another boards. Lately getting a lot of iPhone backlight repairs.  No backlight means iPhone still works and displays very faintly picture. On 6 Plus and 6S Plus sometime you have “half backlight”. You will a shadow in one of top corners of the screen.

Backlight often burns out when replacing the screen. Even with iPhone turned off, there is battery voltage going straight to LCD connector. That’s why you always want to unplug the battery before doing anything else.  When unplugging the lcd, if it crosses the pins from backlight to ground you are creating a short that immediately kills filter.

There are also random backlight failures. Burned filter, bad booster chip, short on capacitor, bad diodes. When the filter burns out often it burns the pad that it sits on. At that point it’s necessary to run a jumper wire from another component that has the signal for backlight fuse. This is a delicate operation and a good repair to show microsoldering skills.

iPhone 6 Plus Backlight repair video

iPhone 6 Plus backlight repair

I just made new video showing the process of iPhone 6 Plus backlight repair. This iPhone was shipped from one of south Florida shops. Initially it came with no backlight at all. After checking the voltages on the connector I determined that potentially one of backligh boosters is out.  Still, I was slightly confused why the I’m not getting half backlight since one line was showing 20v. I’ve replaced the booster and still had no backlight. At the end I had to replace both filters as well. iPhone was fully functioning. Check out the video of that particular repair:

iPhone touch disease repair program scam.

iPhone 6 Plus touch ic repair program

Apple announced their iPhone 6 Plus touch ic repair program.  Now here is what Apple is writing:

“Apple has determined that some iPhone 6 Plus devices may exhibit display flickering or Multi-Touch issues after being dropped multiple times on a hard surface and then incurring further stress on the device.”

Yes, it’s your fault that you have this issue. WRONG.

This is a known issue related to bad manufacturing decisions that apple took. iPhone 6 Plus is just to thin and made out of soft aluminum causing it to bend. On top of that, part of logic board where Touch IC’s are located is flexible due to lack of metal cover. In that location apple decided to put a sticker.

It’s not the first time apple is blaming it’s users for issues with their products. Remember iPhone 4 antenna gate? “Your are holding it wrong”.  Give me a break.

Now, with this program. You can go to apple store with your touch ic issue and get a replacement iPhone for $149. If it qualifies! If you have cracked screen, bend, signs of abuse, you may be out of luck.

Worst part is you are getting replacement iPhone 6 Plus that most likely is the exact same design. I don’t believe that apple would actually change anything in their refurbished phones at this point. Do you know where from  apple gets logic boards for refurbished units?

Let’s say someone dropped their phone and cracked the screen. This is happening every day. This person goes to apple store to get it fixed. Genius bar refuses to replace the screen because the frame is bend or damaged from dropping the phone. Customer get another unit and his phone goes to refurbishing center.  Logic board is being trasfered to new body and tested.  Now that refurbished unit land’s on your hands for $149! While apple just said the issue exhibits after being dropped multiple times.

That means you WILL encounter the same issue, it’s just matter of time.

I had multiple emails from customers asking if I provide lasting repair. Some people were on their 3rd iPhone within weeks. I can proudly say yes!

After the touch ic repair I install my custom laser cut steel shield. This stiffens the logic board, preventing it from flexing and damaging the joints under the new chips.  Another benefit is you keep your data.  Sometimes You are unable to back up your phone because of passcode and no touch functionality. I’m actually fixing Your logic board!

So if you have Touch IC issues, I do not recommend going to apple. Go with iFixLogicBoards or other reputable microsoldering company that installs metal proof shields.

Your iphone backlight needs everything

iPhone backlight repair scene

Sir, Your iPhone 6 backlight needs everything 🙂

Another week, another dollar!

I’m use to repairing iPhone backlight. It’s usually not to hard to figure it out.  Today, I had a neat one.

First, I checked the filters. All of them were good with no shorted capacitors on the line. Darn..

Have to pop the hood, by unsodlering of the metal shield that covers the goods.  I see the usual, burned diode. After searching and replacing burned capacitor I solder new diode.

Plugging the battery. Diodie doesn’t burn and the phone turns on, but not the backlight 🙁

Here we go, I need to replace the backlight chip that’s dipped in glue next to the processor.  Long story short I replaced the chip, Coil, diode, 2 capacitors and a filter that somehow burned.

So yea, that was fun. When you see that Apple brightly booting in front of you, You smile like you just saw million dollars. CASH

6S grey wifi?

iPhone 6S grey wifi

6S Grey Wifi Story.

Yesterday was a interesting day. I had 1x iPhone 6 Plus with touch ic issue, of course.  I also had 3 6S, 5S and iPad air repairs.  Most of them successful … booooooring.

One iPhone 6S Grey Wifi was interesting. Customer said that he just bought it and has No WiFi. He restored iPhone to newest iOS 10.0.2.

I noticed the MAC address was missing in “About” page, which means WiFi Chip failure. Next thing is disassembly and getting the board out.

When I flipped the board I noticed a black electric tape on the spot of the wifi chip. I peal it off and what do I see?!                     WiFi CHIP MISSING.

Some one cut me to it! Unfortunately in a very bad way. Whoever removed the chip ripped the pads from logic boards surface. I could potentially try to run 10 jumpers, but that’s a lot of work and luckily customer didn’t want that kind of repair.

iPhone 6 Plus Touch IC disease madness

iPhone 6 Plus touch ic disease

You probably heard about it. iPhone 6 Plus touch ic disease. Bad manufacturing decisions causing iPhone 6 or 6 Plus to have touch issues and/or flickering grey bar at the top.

If you are experiencing this issue, try to slightly twist the phone vertically. This may help you to temporarily restore touch. This way it let you put passcode and backup your data. If you are lucky…

You may also notice grey flickering bar at the top of the screen when twisting. Typically, that’s when there isn’t much hope for “twist to recover” method. Your iPhone 6 Plus touch ic needs repair.

Replacing the touch ic’s … yes the’re 2 off them! Mason and Cumulus. These two bastards have cracking joints, solder joints that is.

You see, iPhone 6 Plus is a relatively long and thin phone prone to bending. Remember bendgate 2 years ago? This issue was never fixed. Besides, everybody forgot about it 2 months later. 6S model got stronger aluminum 7000 (instead of 6000 on 6 Plus). Additional small modifications to the housing of 6S, made the iPhone much stiffer and harder to bent.

In addition the bendy 6 plus housing, the logic board has no metal shield over touch ic. This metal brace adds stiffness to the logic board. Instead, Apple put a sticker.

Unfortunately, even after the repair of touch ic, the issue can come back. After all, I’m fixing the damage, not the cause. Until now! Thanks to Jessa Jones from iPad Rehab, that came up with a neat idea.

Get unused metal shield from iPad mini and cut it to iPhone 6 Plus size. Then get that metal shield welded to the logic board bracket with solder. This additional structure stiffens the logic board and appears to help with “securing” the chips under the shield.

Shields are being put on all iPhone 6 Plus touch ic repairs.

Now, cutting these shields is somewhat a pain in the …. . It would be so much faster and nicer to have precision cut shields ready to solder. And that’s what I decided to make! I made some measurements, made a drawing and researched manufacturers.

I’m happy to announce that soon I will get first test production batch.  These shields will be also available for other repair shops to stiffen the logic board.
